The Stage’s back panel has a naturalfeeling curve that sits comfortably on your back when riding. It’s not very flexible though, which, combined with the tough ripstop fabric, means you need to be smart with your packing. The pack holds its shape well and doesn’t become uncomfortable when loaded up. When the 2l HydraPak bladder is full, there’s enough room alongside it in the main compartment for a pump, tube and thin jacket, at a push.You can fit a multi-tool and tyre levers in the long front pocket, the top pocket will house a phone and there are straps for a helmet.We had no issues with the pack shifting around, but the thin waist strap can dig in a bit if cinched up tight. The bladder’s bite valve is also tricky to lock while riding. Price $127 (pack) + $48 (2l bladder)

There are plenty of places to stash stuff in this 3l pack – a big rear pocket, two zipped hip pockets and a tool pocket with mesh compartments. The back panel is quite rigid, so the contents stay put even when you’re fully loaded. Widely-spaced pads mean it’s fairly well ventilated too. The best feature is the side straps, which you can cinch down to pull the pack into your lower back and stop it bouncing around. The valve for the 1.5l Hydrapack reservoir is tricky to close while riding, and the magnetic hose tab isn’t as secure as CamelBak’s clip. Price $85

SO GOOD... The little EVOC has some great features, including a neatly tucked away helmet net and a phone-friendly fleecy upper pocket.We also liked the ‘Air Circulation’ system, which raises the pack off your back to avoid heat build-up. The Brace Link straps were among the comfiest on test and great on all-dayers.

This is the smallest offering in the colourful EVOC range, which has long offered great build quality and fit. It’s a good option if you don’t want one of the new-generation ‘harnesses’ but still want a pack that’s as small as possible.

With straps that adjust themselves to suit the width of your shoulders, a broad waistband and deeply channelled ‘Air Circulation’ back panel, this pack promises cool comfort for long-haul rides.
