Spuik’s budget XC race shoe has a simple securing system with a surprisingly stiff sole and raver-friendly looks. There’s a pair of Velcro straps to secure your foot but the upper strap has to be done up very tight to avoid heel lift, giving a single, uncomfortable pressure point.

SO GOOD The Arqus specs come with three lenses, which are relatively easy to fit. Each gets the same four sizeable vent slots to help dump heat and prevent fogging.

SHOES DON’T GET much simpler than Spiuk’s Uhra-M but what there is of it is really well done. The rounded-edge sole gets moulded-in toe studs for extra grip and the compound is soft enough not to skate around on rocks. Stiffness is OK for power pedalling without making you walk like a penguin too.
