EVOC CC 3L hydration pack

This is the smallest offering in the colourful EVOC range, which has long offered great build quality and fit. It’s a good option if you don’t want one of the new-generation ‘harnesses’ but still want a pack that’s as small as possible.

The included 2l bladder fits directly in the main compartment. There’s only one other pocket – a zipped external number with a fleece lining that makes it ideal for phones. Once you get a tube, pump and tools in the pack, there’s not a lot of space for much else, but you can stash a jacket under the removable bungee cord on the exterior. We like the way the drinking tube runs right to the bottom of the shoulder strap, keeping the mouthpiece out of the way, and there’s a detachable hip belt for extra security. At 90$ it’s the cheapest pack here.

Merida Big Seven 100

We've rolled up to our local woods, with a meandering blue trail, some natural wooded tracks and a bit of fire road chucked into the mix to see how the Big Seven 100 tackles trails that entry-level riders are likely to cut their teeth on.

KONA SHRED

With a reputation for no-nonsense ruggedness and a background in the always progressive and punishing riding of Canada, Kona have been building hardcore hardtails for longer than almost anyone else. The Shred is the most expensive bike on test but it’s a proper trail tank.

DRC X-Monitor SP1 lap timer

While smartphone apps such as Strava can be a useful way to keep tabs on your mountain bike rides, sometimes you just can’t beat the simplicity and instant feedback that a good old-fashioned stopwatch style lap timer provides.
