Maxxis Minion SS EXO TR 2.3in tyre

Maxxis have jumped back into the heavy-duty slick game (there used to be a High Roller Semi Slick) with the Minion SS and it’s a usefully quick but reassuringly grippycornering tyre for adding at least a gear to your hardcore riding.

The shoulder tread is the solidly planted, trustworthy alternating L and siped block mix of the Minion. It sits high compared to the centre too – particularly on wider rims – so it bites as soon as you start leaning. That means it contacts sooner on soft ground or at soft pressures when upright so it’s not quite as fast as it could be. The almost continuous centre tread can slip relatively easily if you kick or brake too hard as well. The EXO TR carcass seals effortlessly and rides with smooth, surefooted stability for its responsively low weight though.

The Stratus gloves from Alpinestars offer a decent amount of protection from the cold and wet without compromising control at the bars.

Gusset Magnum stem

SO GOOD Gusset’s 50mm stem is nicely CNC machined from 7075 alloy and the faceplate and internal steerer clamp are available in a range of five anodised colours to complement the black body. The hidden steerer clamp keeps sharp edges to a minimum and removes stress from the body of the stem. Out on the bike, the stem proved flex free and bombproof.

Cannondale Trail SL 29 SS

The fat aluminium tubes are a constrast to the skinny items seen elsewhere in the test, but this rigid Cannondale uses them to create one of the most old-school - and lightest - rides here.

THEY AREN’T CHEAP, but these well made and feature packed shorts are the epitome of classic mountainbike-specific functionality, and on the bike they don’t disappoint.
