Gravity maniacs everywhere swear by the Mallet, and it’s easy to see why. The large platform affords ample support to the foot whether clipped in or not, and adjustable pins allow you to tailor the grip to your preference. We chose to run the pins pretty far in to prevent them getting in the way when clipping in.
The engagement
mechanism is perhaps the easiest to clip into on the market. It facilitates
clipping in both forwards and backwards, which can be really handy when
clipping in on rough ground. The gap between the mechanism and the body is
impressively resistant to becoming bunged-up with mud. The Mallet 3 uses needle
bearings instead of bushings but they nevertheless developed a little play
after three months hard riding. Rebuilding is a quick and cheap fix, so this is
not the end of the world. 15° or 20° of float can be selected by changing the
direction of the cleat. Careful cleat positioning is required to prevent the
shoe fouling on the crank arm when unclipping, especially with clumpy shoes.
The release tension is very light and non-adjustable; this can lead to
accidental disengagement if unused to the feel of the pedal. Once used to the
feel of them, though, they became one of our favourite sets of pedals.
Easy-in, easy-out mechanism with copious float.
