Fox 34 Float Performance 27.5 140 fork

Fox’s mid-weight 34 fork has long struggled to match the categoryleading performance of their XCorientated 32 and aggro 36, but this latest Performance series version is lighter and consistently reliable, even if the damper is a little on/off for us.

It uses the same chassis as the $225 pricier Factory fork, but lacks its ‘Kashima’ stanchion coating and upgraded seals. It’s adequate rather than amazing in terms of tracking and braking stiffness, but at least it’s now significantly lighter than the 36. We’ve had no wear issues with the black stanchion finish, despite a year of regular use, and forks on complete bikes have been similarly reliable. While the ‘Float’ air spring is the same as in the Factory fork, the Performance 34 gets a GRIP rather than FIT4 compression damper. This is a simplified shim/metal-sprung IFP system. Three main settings (open, medium, firm) plus intermediate clicks give easy feel adjustment. Even when run fully open it often has a harsh, spiky feel in the upper stroke, and it’s dive-prone deeper in the travel. Adding the clip-in air spring volume spacers provided can create a more supportive, progressive feel but there are smoother, more sophisticated-feeling forks for less money.

THEY AREN’T CHEAP, but these well made and feature packed shorts are the epitome of classic mountainbike-specific functionality, and on the bike they don’t disappoint.

Gusset Magnum stem

SO GOOD Gusset’s 50mm stem is nicely CNC machined from 7075 alloy and the faceplate and internal steerer clamp are available in a range of five anodised colours to complement the black body. The hidden steerer clamp keeps sharp edges to a minimum and removes stress from the body of the stem. Out on the bike, the stem proved flex free and bombproof.

Alpinestars Stratus gloves

The Stratus gloves from Alpinestars offer a decent amount of protection from the cold and wet without compromising control at the bars.

ENVE M50 29" Wheels

Utah based company ENVE have been making drool-worthy carbon components for some years now. Despite the fact that carbon rims are becoming more and more common on mountain bikes these days, you can guarantee that ENVE wheels will be a talking point when someone is eyeing off a steed. Instantly, the big bold logos on each rim scream "fast", "light" and to some extent, "expensive" The kids call this 'bling'.

Cannondale Trail SL 29 SS

The fat aluminium tubes are a constrast to the skinny items seen elsewhere in the test, but this rigid Cannondale uses them to create one of the most old-school - and lightest - rides here.
