Slytech Kneepro XT knee pads

THE KNEEPRO XTS are Slytech’s top-end offerings, aimed towards gravity-fuelled riding rather than long days turning the pedals.

The ‘2ND SKiN XT’ foam felt stiff when cold so we hoped it’d become more malleable once warm. Unfortunately this wasn’t the case – even when we were up to normal operating temperatures, the Kneepro XTs remained pretty rigid. This caused a somewhat unpleasant feeling of pressure against the knee cap when pedalling.

Fortunately that discomfort was soon forgotten once pointed downhill and stood in the attack position on the bike, when the pre-curved chassis and extra stiffness helped keep the Kneepro XTs firmly in place and, together with the dual Velcro straps, meant they didn’t budge all day, even when inadvertently slammed into the ground.

If you’re more of a pinner than a pedaller and happy to part with a decent chunk of cash for some trustworthy protection, then the Slytech pads are well worth a look.

Commencal are going from strength to strength at the moment and they’ve taken their tough trail hardtail bang up to date with 650b wheels. The handling, smoothness, speed and all-round agility of the basic bike still make it a real blast for technical trail riding though, and it’s a great base for upgrading over time.
