Race Face Ride crankset

OFFERING ALL THE single-ring essentials for 60$ less than the nearest competition, our Value Award winning crankset was obvious right from the start of the test.

Race Face’s Ride cranks are slightly heavier than more expensive units and there’s no oversize 30mm Cinch option, but the steel EXI axle doesn’t feel obviously soft or flexy underfoot. The included 3D-machined narrow/wide rings in a choice of 32 or 34t sizes are secure, durable, laser-etched items that would cost you 55$ if bought separately. If single-ring life turns out not to be for you then the co-moulded spider also works with twin or triple-ring set-ups. You even get a half-decent threaded BB included, which you can always barter with even if you need a different standard.

ENVE M50 29" Wheels

Utah based company ENVE have been making drool-worthy carbon components for some years now. Despite the fact that carbon rims are becoming more and more common on mountain bikes these days, you can guarantee that ENVE wheels will be a talking point when someone is eyeing off a steed. Instantly, the big bold logos on each rim scream "fast", "light" and to some extent, "expensive" The kids call this 'bling'.

KONA SHRED

With a reputation for no-nonsense ruggedness and a background in the always progressive and punishing riding of Canada, Kona have been building hardcore hardtails for longer than almost anyone else. The Shred is the most expensive bike on test but it’s a proper trail tank.

iXS Asper BC shorts

THEY AREN’T CHEAP, but these well made and feature packed shorts are the epitome of classic mountainbike-specific functionality, and on the bike they don’t disappoint.

Gusset Magnum stem

SO GOOD Gusset’s 50mm stem is nicely CNC machined from 7075 alloy and the faceplate and internal steerer clamp are available in a range of five anodised colours to complement the black body. The hidden steerer clamp keeps sharp edges to a minimum and removes stress from the body of the stem. Out on the bike, the stem proved flex free and bombproof.

DMR Defy stem

SO GOOD Lots of thought has gone into the design of the Defy, which has an internal steerer clamp and tilted bar clamp to reduce the stresses going through the 5mm bolts. It has a really low stack height (31mm) and the widest bar clamp on test, which helps to reduce handlebar flex. Aimed at more aggressive riders, the Defy gives a solid feel to the cockpit that definitely gave us confidence when pointing at bigger drops and jumps. It comes with a natty matching top cap too.
