PRO Atherton Star Series stem

DEVELOPED WITH THE Athertons, this is aimed at hard riders with a gravity bent. At 174g it’s not light, but it has a solid construction. The hardware is all 5mm bolts, which are greased rather than threadlocked.

We’ve never had issues with bolts coming loose on a properly fitted stem, so we’d rather have the ease of installation and consistent clamping force offered by greased bolts. The recommended torque of 8Nm is plenty to prevent slippage in all but the biggest crashes. Installation is easy, and the alignment markings and bar roll indicator help, especially if used with PRO’s matching Atherton bar. While the stem itself is plenty stiff, the short 33mm stack height results in a little more steerer tube flex than most if mounted atop a few spacers.

ENVE M50 29" Wheels

Utah based company ENVE have been making drool-worthy carbon components for some years now. Despite the fact that carbon rims are becoming more and more common on mountain bikes these days, you can guarantee that ENVE wheels will be a talking point when someone is eyeing off a steed. Instantly, the big bold logos on each rim scream "fast", "light" and to some extent, "expensive" The kids call this 'bling'.

Merida Big Seven 100

Scott Scale 950

The Scale 950 uses the now traditional-for-cross-country 29er wheels to excellent effect, with a fast but fun character that's happy racing or railing.

KONA SHRED

With a reputation for no-nonsense ruggedness and a background in the always progressive and punishing riding of Canada, Kona have been building hardcore hardtails for longer than almost anyone else. The Shred is the most expensive bike on test but it’s a proper trail tank.
