Joystick Builder stem

CNC MACHINED AND available in both clamp diameters, the Builder employs a novel bar interface. The faceplate clips onto the bar before being bolted onto the stem itself via the twin bolts up top.

This allows for very easy set-up and centring of the bar before the bottom two bolts are added, reducing the possibility of unevenly tightened bolts leading to stress on the bar. This is particularly important with carbon bars, or for hasty home mechanics. Out on the trail, the wide and tall clamps ensured there was no significant flex or any creaking, but the recommended 6Nm torque setting on the 4mm bolts will allow twist on the steerer if really pushed. The 161g weight isn’t too bad, but the Builder’s price is a little hefty.

WEIGHT: 161g (50x31.8mm)
LENGTH(S): 35, 50, 65mm
CLAMPS(S): 31.8, 35mm

Price 120$

RockShox Pike 26

Waaaay back in 2002, RockShox revolutionized the suspension world with the release of its Psylo range of forks. The forks came with 30mm stanchions, a lockout/compression adjustment, the travel was adjustable from 80-120mm, and......wait for it, they came with a quick release 20mm through axle.

Cannondale Trail SL 29 SS

The fat aluminium tubes are a constrast to the skinny items seen elsewhere in the test, but this rigid Cannondale uses them to create one of the most old-school - and lightest - rides here.
