Berghaus Cadence Windstopper jacket

OUT OF THE box this jacket struck us as looking like a (very well specified) tracksuit top. The cut, which dips marginally longer at the back when off the bike but not enough to make a difference when riding, has a relaxed look that would be at home in almost any sport.

It’s got two zipped hand warmer pockets and a drawcord hem but is otherwise sleekly minimal. It’s the fabric that makes the difference here. GoreWindstopper keeps the wind and rain off while ensuring you never get sweaty.

The Cadence is a great jacket for high-energy use but the styling doesn’t quite work on the bike, with sleeves that ride up short. That said, if you want one jacket for a mix of sports then the quality of the fabric for the price could work for you.

Price 150$

The Stratus gloves from Alpinestars offer a decent amount of protection from the cold and wet without compromising control at the bars.

Cannondale Trail SL 29 SS

The fat aluminium tubes are a constrast to the skinny items seen elsewhere in the test, but this rigid Cannondale uses them to create one of the most old-school - and lightest - rides here.

Gusset Magnum stem

SO GOOD Gusset’s 50mm stem is nicely CNC machined from 7075 alloy and the faceplate and internal steerer clamp are available in a range of five anodised colours to complement the black body. The hidden steerer clamp keeps sharp edges to a minimum and removes stress from the body of the stem. Out on the bike, the stem proved flex free and bombproof.

Merida Big Seven 100

We've rolled up to our local woods, with a meandering blue trail, some natural wooded tracks and a bit of fire road chucked into the mix to see how the Big Seven 100 tackles trails that entry-level riders are likely to cut their teeth on.
