7mesh Strategy jacket

THE STRATEGY IS one of two 300$ jackets in this test and we make no apology for the winning spots they both hold. This isn’t high fashion, where price doesn’t necessarily equate to performance. This is a case of the best fabric – GoreWindstopper, once again – being combined with incredibly well-specified functionality and pattern cutting that must have been refined again and again to get just the right fit.

And with the 7mesh jacket, the fit is the thing that hits you first. Put it on and it simply disappears. Not in a so-tight-it’s-a-second-skin sort of way, because although the fit is slim, it’s not skinny. Rather, it just fits so well that there’s nothing to remind you that you’re wearing a jacket. There are two slanted-for-easy-entry pockets (use the opposite hand to access them – it’s counter-intuitive but works) and the seams are taped for optimum weatherproofing but otherwise the detail is pared back. What really matters here is that high-performanceWindstopper fabric and the clever construction that provides that immaculate fit. Turning the jacket inside out, we were blown away by the quality of the manufacturing – it’s unmatched by anything we’ve seen.

This carries our ultimate accolade of being a pure riding jacket. It never got too warm and is more comfy than most jerseys we’ve worn. If you have the budget to invest, we can’t recommend it highly enough.

Utah based company ENVE have been making drool-worthy carbon components for some years now. Despite the fact that carbon rims are becoming more and more common on mountain bikes these days, you can guarantee that ENVE wheels will be a talking point when someone is eyeing off a steed. Instantly, the big bold logos on each rim scream "fast", "light" and to some extent, "expensive" The kids call this 'bling'.

KONA SHRED

GT Zaskar Evolution

While some bike models last just a couple of years, others change with the times to stay at the top of riders’ wishlists. In the second part of this series looking at the evolution of bikes that enjoy enduring popularity with UK riders, we turn to the GT Zaskar – a bike that was at the forefront of our sport for a long time and still has plenty of appeal today.

COMMENCAL EL CAMINO 3

Commencal are going from strength to strength at the moment and they’ve taken their tough trail hardtail bang up to date with 650b wheels. With its skinny rims, crankset and fork, the El Camino certainly isn’t perfect and it’s the least hardcore bike here. The handling, smoothness, speed and all-round agility of the basic bike still make it a real blast for technical trail riding though, and it’s a great base for upgrading over time.

iXS Asper BC shorts

THEY AREN’T CHEAP, but these well made and feature packed shorts are the epitome of classic mountainbike-specific functionality, and on the bike they don’t disappoint.
