Fox Airline gloves

Although the airlines are from Fox’s moto range they’re don’t feel out of place on the trail and we really like the pared back, no frills design.

The stretchy cuff provides a secure yet unobtrusive fit around the wrist but can get a little sweaty on warmer days. We’re big fans of the perforated, super-thin palm, which allows plenty of feedback through from the bar with next to no bunching. The back is a stretchy mesh affair that helps keep you cool when the temperature rises and is surprisingly tough too. Because these are moto gloves there’s no snot wipe on the thumb, which may put some people off.

Cannondale Trail SL 29 SS

The fat aluminium tubes are a constrast to the skinny items seen elsewhere in the test, but this rigid Cannondale uses them to create one of the most old-school - and lightest - rides here.

Gusset Magnum stem

SO GOOD Gusset’s 50mm stem is nicely CNC machined from 7075 alloy and the faceplate and internal steerer clamp are available in a range of five anodised colours to complement the black body. The hidden steerer clamp keeps sharp edges to a minimum and removes stress from the body of the stem. Out on the bike, the stem proved flex free and bombproof.

DRC X-Monitor SP1 lap timer

While smartphone apps such as Strava can be a useful way to keep tabs on your mountain bike rides, sometimes you just can’t beat the simplicity and instant feedback that a good old-fashioned stopwatch style lap timer provides.
