At 6cm long and just 3cm across, the Topeak Mini 9 is small enough to mess with your sense of scale. The reason is that there’s only 96g of the Mini 9 MT in the first place.
While light, it’s
bulkier than the RFR 16 (20mm thick versus 7mm), so it’s not so comfortable in
pockets. The tiny, Velcroflapped Neoprene pouch has a semi-useful belt loop.
The Topeak also offers
fewer tools than the RFR, though what bits it has are fairly well shaped from steel,
and it’s crisp at the tips meaning you’re less likely to round-out bolt heads.
We’d like to see an 8mm Allen key perhaps instead of the T10 and T15.
Like the SKS Tom there
are deep cuts where the steel of the bits has been looped round, but the
elegant shaping and matt finish of the cast aluminium body offset the damage;
the Mini 9 MT retains a look and feel of quality.
High friction from the stiff axles keeps the bits in place when in use, though leverage and
comfort is obviously pretty low
thanks to that abbreviated length and
the slim sideplates, most noticable when swapping
(non-8mm) pedals.
Tiny, light and decently made, but bulky and not
so versatile.
