Rideworks narrow wide ring

If you want to simplify your transmission in patriotic style then Rideworks’ rings are a colourful UK option at a good price.

Rideworks hasn’t deviated from the usual cross section thick and simple fin thin tooth profile pioneered by SRAM, which means it can get a bit grumbly and pick up crap in grotty winter conditions. It runs smoothly enough most of the time though and the simpler design means it’s also slightly cheaper than the other obvious UK made competition from Hope.

The hard anodised finish has scuffed a bit over time as you’d expect but durability is better than another cheaper ring we’re running at the moment and it’s not dropped a chain yet either. There are six colour options in 32, 34 or 36T sizes but no 30T if you’re looking for a crawler cog.

PRICE 57$

Alpinestars Stratus gloves

The Stratus gloves from Alpinestars offer a decent amount of protection from the cold and wet without compromising control at the bars.

Gusset Magnum stem

SO GOOD Gusset’s 50mm stem is nicely CNC machined from 7075 alloy and the faceplate and internal steerer clamp are available in a range of five anodised colours to complement the black body. The hidden steerer clamp keeps sharp edges to a minimum and removes stress from the body of the stem. Out on the bike, the stem proved flex free and bombproof.

Cannondale Trail SL 29 SS

The fat aluminium tubes are a constrast to the skinny items seen elsewhere in the test, but this rigid Cannondale uses them to create one of the most old-school - and lightest - rides here.

iXS Asper BC shorts

THEY AREN’T CHEAP, but these well made and feature packed shorts are the epitome of classic mountainbike-specific functionality, and on the bike they don’t disappoint.
