Halo Vapour Carbon wheels

Good luck explaining this to anyone unfamiliar with high-end MTB kit, but a set of carbon wheels for under 1500$ could almost be described as a bargain! The Vapour Carbons aren’t short of features either.

The rims have a broad 28mm internal width for improved tyre stability and are laced to own-brand hubs with 32 double-butted spokes. The SD6F front hub comes with adaptors for 20mm, 15mm or QR axles. Out back there are two options – the Spin Doctor 6-Drive hub provides 12-degree engagement and comes with adaptors for QR and 142x12mm axles, while the Supa Drive costs 15$ more but o_ers near-instant three-degree pick-up, though you’ll have to pay 22$ for an axle kit if your frame doesn’t have a QR rear end. The Vapour Carbons are available in 26in, 650b or 29in sizes and can be run tubeless if you add rim strips. Stay tuned to find out if our 1,757g 650b samples are tough enough!

Price 1395$ (650b, Supa Drive rear hub)

COMMENCAL EL CAMINO 3

Commencal are going from strength to strength at the moment and they’ve taken their tough trail hardtail bang up to date with 650b wheels. The handling, smoothness, speed and all-round agility of the basic bike still make it a real blast for technical trail riding though, and it’s a great base for upgrading over time.
