E Thirteen EX cog sprocket

E*13's EX cog addsa40 or 42T crawler gear to the top end of your ratios if you remove the 17 or 15T sprocket from your existing 10-speed cassette.

Different 'timed' versions are available for SRAM or Shimano blocks and an extra long rear derailleur set screw is included with the ring, which is a nice touch. The lurch up onto the 42T cog still needs a bit of care so select it early if you can and be prepared to be patient for it to drop back down compared to a conventional cassette. It's worn fine through winter though, is comparably priced and there are blue, red and black options.

PRICE 82$

Gusset Magnum stem

SO GOOD Gusset’s 50mm stem is nicely CNC machined from 7075 alloy and the faceplate and internal steerer clamp are available in a range of five anodised colours to complement the black body. The hidden steerer clamp keeps sharp edges to a minimum and removes stress from the body of the stem. Out on the bike, the stem proved flex free and bombproof.

THEY AREN’T CHEAP, but these well made and feature packed shorts are the epitome of classic mountainbike-specific functionality, and on the bike they don’t disappoint.

Cannondale Trail SL 29 SS

The fat aluminium tubes are a constrast to the skinny items seen elsewhere in the test, but this rigid Cannondale uses them to create one of the most old-school - and lightest - rides here.
