Airshot

Airshot is a classic, simple but brilliant “Why didn’t I think of doing that” product. It’s been executed well enough that we’re happy that its South Walian inventors sweated all the details to create a really good, foolproof and bombproof product rather than us.

Like we say, the idea is simple: Instead of frantically trying to get enough air into a tubeless tyre to seat it with a manic track pump thrash, you simply pump up the Airshot tank to 130psi at your leisure. You then screw the leak free connector onto the tyre valve and release it, dumping all that air in instantly, sealing the tyre first time every time we’ve used it.

It’s not cheap for what is on the face of it just an empty fire extinguisher. If you’ve not already got a track pump to inflate it you’ll have to add one to the total bill making it potentially pricier than the Bontrager combo pump. Touches like the metal, rather than plastic, head and quality connectors all round give it practical toughness and prove it’s an insider design job by real mountain bikers. There’s even an optional valve core adaptor which temporarily replaces sealant gunked valves so you can still blow the tyre onto the rim. It’s lighter than the Bontrager for chucking in car boot or kit bag too.

KONA SHRED

With a reputation for no-nonsense ruggedness and a background in the always progressive and punishing riding of Canada, Kona have been building hardcore hardtails for longer than almost anyone else. The Shred is the most expensive bike on test but it’s a proper trail tank.

Gusset Magnum stem

SO GOOD Gusset’s 50mm stem is nicely CNC machined from 7075 alloy and the faceplate and internal steerer clamp are available in a range of five anodised colours to complement the black body. The hidden steerer clamp keeps sharp edges to a minimum and removes stress from the body of the stem. Out on the bike, the stem proved flex free and bombproof.
