Fox’s affordable evo spec 34 Float forks are significantly smoother for 2015 but they’re heavy, especially compared to the reworked Fox 36.
Fox have worked hard on the open-cartridge Evolution
dampers for 2015 and the more consistent, smoother compression stroke is a match
for most other mid-price forks. The ‘Climb, Trail, Descend’ lever on the crown
lets you easily add a firmer, more stable cornering or braking feel or a full lockout
for road climbs, and rebound is widely adjustable too. The Shimano collaboration
QR15 axle is also excellent.
The Evolution fork is 275$ cheaper than the top-spec Factory
version. While the Factory fork is available with 160mm (6.3in) of travel, the aftermarket
Evo tops out at 150mm (5.9in), which helps keep stiffness average (if not
remarkable) for a 34mm fork but means it won’t suit some 160mm-travel enduro
bikes.
The larger oil volume and other details of the open
cartridge compared to the FIT cartridge of the Factory fork also means more
weight and the upper tubes are heavier too. That leaves the 34 Evo noticeably
more heavy than most mid-diameter forks and a lot heavier than the much stiffer
36.
