SKS Tom 18 multi-tool

SO GOOD
The Tom 18 doesn’t take up a lot of room in your pocket or pack but has a whole load of tools crammed into its compact 70x50mm body. It sits comfortably in your hand when in use and gives easily enough leverage for a trailside tighten. The Allen keys are good quality, and the chain tool folds flat to sit flush when not in use and is easy to use too.

NO GOOD
The plastic compartment for a chain joining pin is largely redundant in this age of quick links. We can’t help but think SKS would be better off including another, more useful tool that would make better use of the space.

PRICE 35$

Alpinestars Stratus gloves

The Stratus gloves from Alpinestars offer a decent amount of protection from the cold and wet without compromising control at the bars.

Gusset Magnum stem

SO GOOD Gusset’s 50mm stem is nicely CNC machined from 7075 alloy and the faceplate and internal steerer clamp are available in a range of five anodised colours to complement the black body. The hidden steerer clamp keeps sharp edges to a minimum and removes stress from the body of the stem. Out on the bike, the stem proved flex free and bombproof.

The fat aluminium tubes are a constrast to the skinny items seen elsewhere in the test, but this rigid Cannondale uses them to create one of the most old-school - and lightest - rides here.

Merida Big Seven 100

We've rolled up to our local woods, with a meandering blue trail, some natural wooded tracks and a bit of fire road chucked into the mix to see how the Big Seven 100 tackles trails that entry-level riders are likely to cut their teeth on.
