Renthal Apex stem

WHILE THEIR COMPACT Duo is aimed at more aggressive riders, Renthal’s new stem is for all types of mountain biker.

It’s light enough for XC at 158g (90mm length) but strong and stiff enough to take a 780mm bar. The Apex is available in 10mm increments from 40 to 90mm long, and we’ve been told a 32mm option is coming soon. The body is CNC machined from 2014 aluminium, while the clamps are 7075 aluminium. The stem has a six-degree rise and can be flipped and run upside down – useful if you’re a 29er rider wanting to lower your front end.

PRICE 115$ (all lengths)

Despite the fact that carbon rims are becoming more and more common on mountain bikes these days, you can guarantee that ENVE wheels will be a talking point when someone is eyeing off a steed. Instantly, the big bold logos on each rim scream "fast", "light" and to some extent, "expensive" The kids call this 'bling'.

Canyon Spectral AL 6.0

Round two, and the 6.0 leaps out of the blocks. From the moment we're off the smaller wheeled Spectral wants to go flat out. Standing on the pedals on the small steep climbs is slightly more reactive, surging the Spectral forward that little more eagerly. We need more body language to get the wheels over the roots, but again the 2.4in Mountain King's tread impresses.
