Hope bottom bracket with GXP converter

Hope bottom bracket

AFTER GOING THROUGH two SRAM GXP bottom brackets on a test bike we decided it was time to turn to UK based Hope for some properly UK-proof kit.

To make the BB work with our SRAM cranks we had to pop on a set of Hope's GXP converters. These are essentially two lightweight machined aluminium cups that sit snuggly inside the bearings to make up the difference in spindle sizes. The complete set-up weighed just 115g and was easy to install in the bike's threaded 73mm BB shell (press-fit versions are also available).

The Hope bottom bracket runs on double sealed, custom made and - most importantly - replaceable custom Swiss bearings. After nearly a year of solid hammering it still feels silky smooth.

PRICE  120$ (threaded BB), 14$ (converter)

ENVE M50 29" Wheels

Utah based company ENVE have been making drool-worthy carbon components for some years now. Despite the fact that carbon rims are becoming more and more common on mountain bikes these days, you can guarantee that ENVE wheels will be a talking point when someone is eyeing off a steed. Instantly, the big bold logos on each rim scream "fast", "light" and to some extent, "expensive" The kids call this 'bling'.

Canyon Spectral AL 6.0

Round two, and the 6.0 leaps out of the blocks. From the moment we're off the smaller wheeled Spectral wants to go flat out. Standing on the pedals on the small steep climbs is slightly more reactive, surging the Spectral forward that little more eagerly. We need more body language to get the wheels over the roots, but again the 2.4in Mountain King's tread impresses.
