FOX 36 fork

Five reasons to check out Fox’s latest hard-hitting single-crown fork

1 RACE-WEIGHT CHASSIS
The lower leg assembly is new for 2015 and is available in all three wheel sizes (26in, 650b and 29in). It has a new 20mm through-axle system that can be adapted to accept a 15mm axle (one is included in the box) and an increased bushing overlap to cut friction and wear. The new crown is lighter and has less of a drop, reducing overall fork length. With claimed weights starting from 1.9kg (4.2lb), the new 36 is actually lighter than its slimmer stanchioned, less heavy-duty Fox 34 sibling.

2 SUPER-SLICK ACTION
With reduced friction lower legs, Kashima coated stanchions and molybdenum (a chemical used in the Kashima coat) in the suspension oil, the new 36 has a seriously active feel. Add a new negative and positive air spring system, and the fork is so plush it sags even with no rider aboard the bike. The result is incredible front wheel grip and far less fatigue from vibration and trail chatter.

3 VAST DAMPING RANGE
The RC2 damper uses lower viscosity oil for improved rebound performance, and the range of damping offered via the separate low-speed and high-speed compression dials allows perfect set-up for the terrain you’re riding. The improved damping works so well that you can run a proper amount of sag to allow the fork to extend into holes without worrying about it diving. Instead of our usual 25 per cent sag, we ran 30 per cent without the fork wallowing or sitting in the mid stroke. It’s very supportive.

4 DISSOLVES HARD HITS
We tested the 36 on the ‘Wibbly Wobbly into Rim Dinger’ option at BikePark Wales, spending all day shuttling that one trail while trying out different settings. Harsh and repetitive impacts were eaten up, with just dull thuds felt at the handlebar. Trail feel was still there but impacts simply weren’t transmitted to our hands, meaning we could ride faster, for longer. For riding hard in demanding conditions, the RC2 damper feels incredible.

Utah based company ENVE have been making drool-worthy carbon components for some years now. Despite the fact that carbon rims are becoming more and more common on mountain bikes these days, you can guarantee that ENVE wheels will be a talking point when someone is eyeing off a steed. Instantly, the big bold logos on each rim scream "fast", "light" and to some extent, "expensive" The kids call this 'bling'.

While smartphone apps such as Strava can be a useful way to keep tabs on your mountain bike rides, sometimes you just can’t beat the simplicity and instant feedback that a good old-fashioned stopwatch style lap timer provides.
