Panaracer Quasi Moto 27.5x2.0in tyre

PANARACER'S PIONEERING 650B-ONLY tyre ironically has a more '26in' feel than most mid-sized rubber due to its 560g weight, which means excellent acceleration, and its rounded carcass, which turns very easily.

It blows up just under 2in (49x48mm, to be precise), grips well in loose loam/sand or grassy conditions and cleans quickly after wet patches, making it a good summer singletrack speed tyre.

The staggered centre tread isn't as fast as a semi-slick pattern on harder surfaces though and it needs decent air pressures to help the sidewall bumper shrug off impact flats on rocky ground.

PRICE 60$

Alpinestars Stratus gloves

The Stratus gloves from Alpinestars offer a decent amount of protection from the cold and wet without compromising control at the bars.

Merida Big Seven 100

We've rolled up to our local woods, with a meandering blue trail, some natural wooded tracks and a bit of fire road chucked into the mix to see how the Big Seven 100 tackles trails that entry-level riders are likely to cut their teeth on.

Cannondale Trail SL 29 SS

The fat aluminium tubes are a constrast to the skinny items seen elsewhere in the test, but this rigid Cannondale uses them to create one of the most old-school - and lightest - rides here.

Gusset Magnum stem

SO GOOD Gusset’s 50mm stem is nicely CNC machined from 7075 alloy and the faceplate and internal steerer clamp are available in a range of five anodised colours to complement the black body. The hidden steerer clamp keeps sharp edges to a minimum and removes stress from the body of the stem. Out on the bike, the stem proved flex free and bombproof.
