Maxxis Minion DHR II EXO TR 29x2.3in tyre

AS YOU'D EXPECT from the chunky centre tread blocks and aggressive shoulders, the Minion DHR II is most at home being ridden aggressively and particularly shines on steep, loose tracks. Scream into a dusty chute at speed and you'll be surprised by just how much you can get the DHR II to bite in when you pull on the brakes.

It's not the fastest rolling rear tyre or the lightest at 880g, but any sluggishness on the flat is soon forgotten thanks to the predictable grip on tap when you start descending. The EXO sidewall protection takes rough rock sections in its stride, and we had no issues with getting the Minion inflated tubeless or burping air when really riding hard at low pressures.

WHO IS SAM REYNOLDS? Hailing from South East England, Sam Reynolds is one of the UK's top freeriders, specialising in dirt jumping and slopestyle. But with mates like World Cup downhiller Brendan Fairclough, he also likes to get up to speed in the hills, where he's been introducing the Collosus to some colossal jumps, gaps and drops.

CANYON NERVE AL 8.0

S ince their entry into the UK market a few years ago, Canyon have made a name for themselves as purveyors of well-made bikes that exhibit often extraordinary value. Cannondale Trail SL 29 SS

The fat aluminium tubes are a constrast to the skinny items seen elsewhere in the test, but this rigid Cannondale uses them to create one of the most old-school - and lightest - rides here.
