Fox Attack jersey

THE ATTACKWAS one of only two jerseys on test to pass the ‘feels just right test’ so it’s no surprise that it shares the highest score. It takes the overall winner’s spot too because every detail of what at first appears to be a straightforward technical T-shirt is so exceptionally well thought through and executed.

Flatlock seams throughout mean no lumps or bumps and a chafe-free finish. They complement the ultra-smooth main body fabric, which has worn well despite its silk-like feel and shows no signs of ride-fatigue despite being picked from the pile more often than not as the days have warmed up.

The back is made from what’s described as a ‘structured mesh.’ In real terms on the bike, that means its more open knit helps keep you cool, plus it’s extremely effective at wicking away sweat and then drying. With the addition of venting holes down the sides, this means it’s as comfortable a jersey as we’ve ever worn in hot weather.

The V neck and the panel construction of the shoulders help create a fit that’s neat and relaxed at the same time, and while it might be a tiny exaggeration to say the Attack moves like it’s part of you, it’s pretty damn good. A long dropped tail and cleanly overlocked hem are the finishing touches that keep things sleek if you want to tuck it in, but keep you covered in style if you want to let it all hang out. A worthy winner.

ENVE M50 29" Wheels

Utah based company ENVE have been making drool-worthy carbon components for some years now. Despite the fact that carbon rims are becoming more and more common on mountain bikes these days, you can guarantee that ENVE wheels will be a talking point when someone is eyeing off a steed. Instantly, the big bold logos on each rim scream "fast", "light" and to some extent, "expensive" The kids call this 'bling'.

COMMENCAL EL CAMINO 3

Commencal are going from strength to strength at the moment and they’ve taken their tough trail hardtail bang up to date with 650b wheels. With its skinny rims, crankset and fork, the El Camino certainly isn’t perfect and it’s the least hardcore bike here. The handling, smoothness, speed and all-round agility of the basic bike still make it a real blast for technical trail riding though, and it’s a great base for upgrading over time.

Scott Scale 950

The Scale 950 uses the now traditional-for-cross-country 29er wheels to excellent effect, with a fast but fun character that's happy racing or railing.

Merida Big Seven 100

We've rolled up to our local woods, with a meandering blue trail, some natural wooded tracks and a bit of fire road chucked into the mix to see how the Big Seven 100 tackles trails that entry-level riders are likely to cut their teeth on.

CANYON NERVE AL 8.0

S ince their entry into the UK market a few years ago, Canyon have made a name for themselves as purveyors of well-made bikes that exhibit often extraordinary value. The secret (or catch, depending on your point of view) is that the brand don’t have dealers – they ship bikes directly to your door.
