Egg-shaped chainrings go enduro
ROTOR
HAVE GONE back to the drawing board for their new single-ring mountain bike
crankset, the REX 1.1. They have updated
heir trademark oval chainrings with a new thick/thin tooth profile and
made the crank arms stronger and lighter than ever.
The cranks are constructed using the same Trinity
Drilling System hollow construction as the company’s latest road models, where
each arm is CNC machined from a bar of 7055 aluminium and then has three
internal holes drilled throughout its length to save weight. At 485g a pair, they’re some of the
lightest alloy arms on the market.
It’s the egg-shaped Q-Ring chainring that really makes
these cranks stand out though. The elliptical shape is said to minimise dead
spots in your pedal stroke, increasing power and acceleration, reducing muscle
fatigue and encouraging smoother pedalling that should give improved traction.
The REX’s QX1 Q-Ring also has the latest alternating thick/thin tooth profile
designed to keep your chain where it needs to be over rough terrain.
The rings are available in 28, 32, 34 and 36t sizes,
with adapters available aftermarket for non-REX cranks.
