RockShox Lyrik RC2 DH Solo Air fork

THE LYRIK DH hasn’t changed for three years now but it’s a mark of how good it is that it’s still one of the best hardcore single- crown forks around and a proper bargain now too.

The Lyrik has some dated features – it’s only compatible with 26in wheels, comes with a 20mm Maxle throughaxle rather than a 15mm Maxle Lite and has a ziptie cable guide on the crown – but the 35mm stanchion chassis is super-accurate and strong without being excessively heavy and RockShox have dropped the price by 150$ since last year.

The seals take a while to loosen up and this delays the time it takes for the stroke to get fully plush, but once bedded in the fork has a supple start to suck up small-bump traction and then a consistently progressive stroke through to a controlled bottom out.

This RC2 DH version has separate high- and low-speed compression damping adjustments so you dial in as much support or fluidity as you want. Dual Flow rebound means it comes back up to fighting height fast but doesn’t bounce through the top stroke. Spare seals and a shock pump are included, and reliability is totally rock solid however hard you ride it.

ENVE M50 29" Wheels

Utah based company ENVE have been making drool-worthy carbon components for some years now. Despite the fact that carbon rims are becoming more and more common on mountain bikes these days, you can guarantee that ENVE wheels will be a talking point when someone is eyeing off a steed. Instantly, the big bold logos on each rim scream "fast", "light" and to some extent, "expensive" The kids call this 'bling'.

COMMENCAL EL CAMINO 3

Commencal are going from strength to strength at the moment and they’ve taken their tough trail hardtail bang up to date with 650b wheels. With its skinny rims, crankset and fork, the El Camino certainly isn’t perfect and it’s the least hardcore bike here. The handling, smoothness, speed and all-round agility of the basic bike still make it a real blast for technical trail riding though, and it’s a great base for upgrading over time.

Merida Big Seven 100

We've rolled up to our local woods, with a meandering blue trail, some natural wooded tracks and a bit of fire road chucked into the mix to see how the Big Seven 100 tackles trails that entry-level riders are likely to cut their teeth on.

Scott Scale 950

The Scale 950 uses the now traditional-for-cross-country 29er wheels to excellent effect, with a fast but fun character that's happy racing or railing.

Fizik Thar Manganese Rail Saddle

The Fizik Thar is claimed to be the world's first 29er-specific saddle. Yep, you read that correctly, 29er specific. So what makes it so 29er specific?
