DHB Aeron Full Protection jacket


THE AERON HAS a racy fit, with extra length at the back that kept the mucky spray from our gloopy spring test trails at bay. It’s a little tight under the arms but just about gets away with this due to the stretch of the fabric. More refinement in the cut would add comfort though, especially when layering.

The fabric feels sturdy and neoprene-like. Although it affords good durability and protection it gets Full Protection warm pretty quickly, and while there are vents on the shoulders, they don’t provide much in the way of extra airflow, so this jacket suffers from a lack of breathability. Being extra-picky, the material is on the noisy side too.

There are three traditional rear pockets plus one zipped one, but this is too small for larger smartphones.

Commencal are going from strength to strength at the moment and they’ve taken their tough trail hardtail bang up to date with 650b wheels. With its skinny rims, crankset and fork, the El Camino certainly isn’t perfect and it’s the least hardcore bike here. The handling, smoothness, speed and all-round agility of the basic bike still make it a real blast for technical trail riding though, and it’s a great base for upgrading over time.
