THE LATEST FRONT fender from carbon fibre specialists RockGuardZ boasts a new profile that's designed to control the way in which mud and water exit the mudguard more effectively. Rubber strips have also been added for a quieter ride.

As with the first-generation mudguards, it's easy enough to fit using the supplied cable ties. The new profile and rubber strips make alignment easier this time around though, which is a bonus. We fitted ours to an X-Fusion RV1 DH fork (which houses a 650b wheel fitted with a 2.35in tyre) and have had zero issues with mud clearance.

In gloopier conditions, the underside seems to benefit from the Flowcoat coating, which helps to prevent mud building up. When screaming down sodden trails and through puddles, we found the Evo2 very effective at keeping our goggles clear and face clean.

Commencal are going from strength to strength at the moment and they’ve taken their tough trail hardtail bang up to date with 650b wheels. With its skinny rims, crankset and fork, the El Camino certainly isn’t perfect and it’s the least hardcore bike here. The handling, smoothness, speed and all-round agility of the basic bike still make it a real blast for technical trail riding though, and it’s a great base for upgrading over time.

Canyon Spectral AL 6.0

Round two, and the 6.0 leaps out of the blocks. From the moment we're off the smaller wheeled Spectral wants to go flat out. Standing on the pedals on the small steep climbs is slightly more reactive, surging the Spectral forward that little more eagerly. We need more body language to get the wheels over the roots, but again the 2.4in Mountain King's tread impresses.
